It is customary to make a charitable donation (tzedakah) in connection with Yizkor on Yom Kippur. Giving charity in memory of the deceased connects their memory to a positive deed and brings merit and elevation to their soul.

Traditionally, donations are made in multiples of $18, which represents the numerical value of the Hebrew word chai (meaning "life").
